This is a question, by the way, to Spielberg and his “West Side Story”. Other nominees that year included the black-and-white drama “Belfast”, the tragicomedy “Don’t Look Up”, the Chekhov-inspired Japanese drama “Drive My Car”, the epic sci-fi “Dune”, the sports drama “King Richard”, the nostalgic coming-of-age film “Licorice Pizza”, the noir thriller “Nightmare Alley” and the heavyweight film “Dog Power”. That’s a strong line-up full of stellar names. So maybe the Academy just decided to reward the most unobvious film, wrongly considered an outsider.

The film was shot on location in Nova Scotia, and Defoe revealed that the extreme weather conditions were one of the most challenging aspects of the production.
And while I’m not a masochist, there’s no substitute for shitty weather. It has the ability to put you in a place where you can connect to your body, where you don’t even have to pretend. When you’re cold, you’re cold. The weather element was an integral part of the story and we were going to be in it. Sometimes the weather was so fierce that we could just be swept out to sea, and the rain so heavy (both natural and sometimes amplified by sprinkler technology) that it burned my skin red hot.
