African documentary film wins top prize at Berlin Film Festival

The Grand Jury Prize, chaired this year by Oscar-winning Kenyan-Mexican actress Lupita Nyong’o, was awarded to the South Korean drama “Traveller’s Needs” starring Isabelle Huppert. It tells the story of a lonely French woman who finds herself destitute and begins teaching French to two Korean women while numbing her heartache with makkoli (Korean rice wine).

The winner of the Silver Bear for Best Director was Dominican Nelson Carlos De Los Santos Ayres for his documentary “Pepe”. This experimental film is directed on behalf of the now dead hippopotamus Pepe, who was the first and only hippopotamus killed in South America.
